A Ginger Jedi to Save Us All - Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Review

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was released last Friday and has been getting better reviews than expected. It pushes all of the right buttons for a Star Wars action-adventure. It has the exploration of Uncharted and the combat of Dark Souls.

The story is dark as things for the Jedi are at their bleakest. The game is set five years after Palpatine’s and Vader’s purge of the Jedi Order. Cal Kestis and Cere Junda are survivors of Order 66 and are left with the survivor’s guilt that comes with it. Cal is a little boring at times, he lacks any sort of dimension and depth to his character. Cere is far more detailed and interesting as she battles with her survival and the memories of her past. Even the main antagonist, Second Sister, has unexpected depth. This is a welcome addition after two-dimensional villains featured in previous Star Wars games.

It is very grungy and dark so if you are looking for light-hearted Jedi banter, then you’ve come to the wrong place. Gris does give us some comic relief, but the majority is doom and gloom. Almost every world you visit is surprisingly large. With sections and shortcuts, you will later learn to blast through. Much like Tomb Raider.

Each setting is fully realised with different natural barriers to overcome, like carnivorous plants or subterranean caverns. The lightsabre is the only weapon you’ll use, obviously. Using it feels satisfying and authentic to the movies. It shares a lot of Dark Souls like combat. You need to pay attention to dodges and parrying, as well as the timing of your attacks. Storm Troopers are still incredibly easy to kill.

Meditation circles will appear around the map that allow you to restore health and healing canisters. This, however, will respawn every enemy in the vicinity. Much like Dark Souls.

It keeps things loyal to the Star Wars lore whilst being fun and exciting. Interesting combat and exciting level designs lead to a great gaming experience. Overall, if you are a fan of Star Wars, then this game is definitely for you.
