Who is Apple Arcade For?
Apple has announced its latest advancement in gaming. Apple Arcade is Apple’s answer to Google’s Stadia. Apple has joined forces with some of the worlds most visionary developers. On their website Apple says:
“Apple Arcade was made to explore. You’ll find every kind of game you love, and others like you’ve never seen. With new characters, stories, and world’s arriving each month.”
Unlike Stadia, there is no triple A titles. It is mainly indie, mobile titles. It is available on all Apple platforms, from iPad to Mac. You can download games to play offline, wherever you want. Apple Arcade boasts over 100 unique titles, exclusive to Apple’s devices. Including Beyond a Steel Sky.
The collection of games available is set to be curated by experts and will be updated monthly. Unlike Stadia, there is no custom controller to come with it but it is compatible with PS4 and Xbox One controllers.
In my opinion, I’m not sure who this is for. Google Stadia offers triple A titles like Cyberpunk 2077. I just don’t think it will be worth it when there are better options out there. Mobile gamers are not dedicated enough to commit to a monthly subscription when most Apps are free or less than £5. Apple Arcade hasn't found a clear audience, and I think that will be it's downfall.
Apple Arcade is released on the 19th of September.
